D&AD & Canva
Year 2
The Brief
Canva’s primary focus remains the same; to bring people into the product, empowering everyone to design anything, publish anywhere, with every ingredient, in every language on every device.
The Challenge
How can we work together to educate the creative industries on how Canva can become an integral part of their workflow and help build a more collaborative relationship with their clients?
The Solution
We embed Canva into D&AD's established ways of working with Students, Educators and Creative Professionals around the world – amplifying their experience of our flagship programmes.
Canva for Education
Creating opportunities for Canva to help New Blood get noticed.
Promotional Toolkit
An extended resource for all New Blood entrants, plus promotional tools for Judges, Nominees and Winners
Imitation is the highest form of flattery – and we're unabashed admirers of Canva's partnership with the Webby's. We'll make it easy for all industry Judges to announce their appointments, Students and Tutors to share news of their New Blood nominations and Winners to celebrate their Pencils – with a (you guessed it!) fully customisable promotional toolkit with Canva. To include social assets, digital ads, email images, social badges and more.
– 5,007 New Blood Entrants
– 173 Industry Judges
– 186 Pencil Winners
– 50 Academy Attendees (plus WPP mentors)
– 100+ Shifters

Just imagine Instagram, TikTok and Linkedin feeds being lit up by our 2023 New Blood creative campaign – with assets fully customised and created with some Canva magic. Our agency (Guerrilla Studio) has designed branded buttons, stickers and a strong UGC element.
New Blood Toolkit
Extended to the Creative Class of 2023
More than a quarter of all 2022 entrants accessed the New Blood Toolbox – making use of Canva's premium templates, fonts, videos and features to create their entries. But the majority of those entrants have now graduated. We have a new audience of final year students to engage this in academic year.
Plus, we'll extend the same access to all 100x Shifters in London, NYC, Sydney, Hamburg and Sao Paulo.

Tutor's Presentation
Teaching tools for Educators
A ready-made Canva deck for course leaders to customise and present New Blood briefs. On campus or online, we'll empower them to bring the opportunity to life for all their students, who will comment, ask questions and begin to use Canva Docs as teaching (and learning) tools.
If Canva becomes a way to receive feedback from their tutors now, students will take this way of working with them into their future careers, receiving feedback from clients.

New Blood Pitchcraft
With Canva Pro Video
Our research is clear... one of the lessons students struggle to learn (and teachers to teach), is how to create Pencil-winning pitch videos. We'll work with D&AD Talent to create learning content that that is both platform agnostic and universally applicable – before making it easy for our users to choose Canva Pro Video (by linking out to your Toolbox), to put those lessons into practice.
This strategy has served us well in the past with this series of films for Squarespace.

Award for Creators
A New Blood first with Canva
In a recent study, Adobe revealed that creators make up 23% of people globally, meaning nearly one in four individuals are contributing to art and creativity. They may not be studying art or design, or go on go make a living as a creative professional. But Canva empowers everyone to design. Together we will celebrate and encourage students creating for themselves, building fans and influencing communities online – with New Blood's first ever brief for creators. Who better than Canva to partner in this space?

New Blood High
An earlier intervention
D&AD produced a successful short course on Creative Bravery for homeschooling parents during the pandemic. Now we are entering into partnership with WPP and Daydream Believers to set the very first New Blood brief for high schoolers. Our shared goal? To stimulate interest in our industry and open young minds to the possibility of career in creativity.
We expect to up to 300 schools in the UK, generating between 500 and 1,500 entries. Perhaps even more than our New Blood university students, high school pupils will need a simple and easy -to-use tool with which to create and present their ideas.

New Blood Insights Report
Canva helps make New Blood, already the biggest creative student awards going, the most open and accessible too.
We know that way more work was created in response to New Blood briefs than was entered last year. The reason? With budgets tougher than ever, many Educators were forced to judge the work of all their students – and enter only those they personally believed stood a chance at winning a Pencil.
That seems an awful shame when this business of ours can be so subjective. Everyone deserves a chance.
This year we'll take away all financial barriers for students and tutors. Effectively we'll make New Blood free for all. However, rather than simply doing away with the traditional £20 GPB per entry (designed to discourage incomplete or ill conceived entries), we'll give New Blood the option to share their thoughts with us and with each other. Complete our short survey, give us your time and thoughts – and we'll flip this into a New Blood's first global insights report. D&AD x Canva's deep dive into the minds of the immediate next generation of creatives.
